Hisense, LTD.

A day in the life of an Industrial Designer at Hisense

8:30am - Arrive at work. Turn on computer, see what the buzz is in the next cubicle. Chat with co-workers.

9:30am
- Brainstorm and work out designs for new 2010 TVs in the meeting room. Look through piles and piles of magazines - electronics, technological trends, design collections, national geographic photography. Anything. Sketch sketch sketch. Discuss. Love life.

11:15am - Head for the cafeteria. Pose like movie stars in the elevator.

11:20am - Arrive at cafeteria. Line up for food. Wait only a few minutes because you got there early.

11:25am - Meat, Vegetable, Rice. Cost = 4.8 RMB = $0.70 USD. Eat talk eat talk. Tell the "top 10 most disgusting jokes" and compete to see who can hold down their food best.

11:45am - Go out to buy fruit from the fruit stands. Go to the bank. If you're --unrevealed person X--, go get your nails done or buy a new dress during lunch break. Eat the watermelon you just bought.

12:00pm - Still lunch break. Play pool on the computer because today wasn't the go-out-to-a-billiards-bar-after-lunch day. Nap for an hour at your desk. Nap in the design team lounge ... where your co-workers secretly lurk about while you're asleep.

1:00pm - Back to work. Re-evaluate designs. Model on Rhinoceros or 3DMax, finish images in Photoshop. Perhaps shoot some product photos in the studio.

1:17pm - Get attacked by a mango named Shark.

1:20pm - Head out for the International SinoCES exhibition. Check out the latest designs, products, models. Check out our competition. Check out this year's award-winning designs in all departments. Take sample shots with Canon's top-of-the-line DSLRs. Hello Mark I, II, and III. Continue to prefer Nikon for landscape.

3:00pm - Mandatory company break time. Drop your work to play the Chinese version of Hackey Sack in the hallway. (seriously, they do this everyday for the half-hour break.) Go upstairs and play ping pong. Or, chat chat chat in the girls'/pregnant people corner and
discuss all the good-looking people in Anne's photos from MIT. (We are all designers/artists after all.) Look through the photos the guys took of all the models from the tech exhibition.

3:30pm - Once again hard at work.

3:53pm - Goofing off again. Need to relax the brain and search for creative inspiration. Peek over to see what your neighbor's up to. Discuss her/your designs.

4:12pm - Get antsy at your desk and pop over for a little chatty chat. Discuss at length the latest movies, or cameras, or how gorgeous Tibet is, or stomach pains from pregnancy, or the clothes someone in the girls' corner just bought for their baby, or how awesome House MD is, or good places to visit in China, or the salary/standard of living discrepancy between China/US, or anything in between.

4:30pm - Find a piece of a TV mock-up/model and re-enact The Ring in the office.

4:36pm
- Demonstrate the toddler monkey leash co-worker Y just bought for her 2.5 year old.

5:30pm - Leave work. Walk by all the other employees who are starting their daily post-work basketball game. With countless spectators (all wearing dashing white lab coats) ... who even line the walls outside the gate to watch.

GO HOME.
